The Carneddau are the range of mountains that flank the northern side of the Ogwen Valley in Snowdonia, North Wales. The range takes its name from the two largest mountains of Carnedd Dafydd (1044m) and Carnedd Llewelyn (1064m) and are only second on height to mighty Snowdon itself.
To ascend the Carneddau is a day trek that crosses, river, moor, rocks and ridges. It sees the stunning Snowdonia mountain landscape from all directions and leaves nothing to be desired. If one wants to see the most in one day, hiking the Carneddeau is the way to do it.
The trek will is led by our expert Mountain Leaders that are qualified, insured and highly experienced. All you need to do is come with sense of adventure; we’ll do the rest.
The trek over the Carneddeau can be shortened or lengthened depending on the strength of the group and the prevailing conditions. An example itinerary:
- Meet at Gwern Gof Uchaf campsite. Safety brief and depart.
- Ascend Pen yr Ole Wen (978m) from Glan Dena.
- Transverse and ascend Carnedd Dafydd (1044m).
- Traverse and ascend Carnedd Llewelyn (1064m).
- Descend via Cwn Llugwy to Gwern Gof Isaf.
- Return to Gwern Gof Uchaf by valley bridleway.
Walking the Carneddeau is a 1 day trek of 10 miles with a total ascent approximately 1000m. The terrain is mountainous, rough/uneven and sometimes rocky.
There is a short technical section that requires scrambling at grade 1. Commitment to the route is moderate. The event is therefore moderate in difficulty and is suitable for beginners with good fitness and some experience walking off-road, and a good sense of adventure.
The event costs include specialist equipment such as maps, compasses and first aid equipment, that will be carried by our Mountain Leader/s. Participants are required to bring some mandatory personal kit:
- Rucksack large enough for all your kit

A comprehensive kit list is given with the joining instructions. We also have lots of kit to loan out, so if we can help you out simply let us know what you need on your booking form.
