The Edale Horseshoe

Edale is a popular village in the heart of the Peak District National Park. It is flanked to the north by Kinder Scout (633m), the highest point in the Peak District, and Mam Tor (517m) to the south; the ‘mother hill’ that divides the east and western Peak.

Walking the periphery of the valley is known as the Edale horseshoe, and is a beautiful hike that takes in some of the best scenery in the Peak District. It is a great way to experience the Peak District and a hiking ‘must do’ for all explorers and adventurers.

The hike is led by our expert Mountain Leaders that are qualified, insured and highly experienced. All you need to do is come with sense of adventure; we’ll do the rest.

Itinerary

The Edale Horseshoe is a 20km hike that may be completed in either 1 or 2 days. The itinerary may include the following:

  1. Meet at Edale train station. Safety briefing.
  2. Ascend Mam Tor (517m) by Hollins Cross.
  3. Traverse Rushup Edge.
  4. Descend to Upper Booth (to camp if done in 2 days).
  5. Ascend Kinder (633 m) via Jacobs Ladder.
  6. Traverse valley edge to Grindsbrook Clough.
  7. Descend to Edale station. Debrief and depart.

Personal Fitness:

Hiking the Edale Horseshoe is a long 1 day trek of approximately 20 km (12 miles) or 2 short days of 10 km (6 miles), with a total ascent approximately 800m. The terrain is hill and moorland and is rough/uneven, sometimes rocky.

Commitment to the route is low, but if done in 1 day is fairly long.

The hike is therefore easy or moderate in difficulty and is suitable for beginners with good fitness. Some experience walking off-road is an advantage but not essential.

Personal Equipment:

The event costs include specialist equipment such as maps, compasses and first aid equipment, etc, that will be carried by our Mountain Leader/s. Participants are required to bring some mandatory personal kit:
