If you want to build specific navigation skills, you might be interested in a bespoke course.
These bespoke courses are perfect if you’re preparing for Hill & Moorland Leader or Mountain Leader Assessments, or if you want to get into orienteering and be fast at making navigational decisions.
All bespoke navigation courses are run by Emily Thompson who is a qualified International Mountain Leader and Winter Mountain Leader, and so has passed assessments herself in all conditions using a variety of mapping.
Example bespoke courses:
Micro Navigation
Micro navigation is using small map details to navigate, such as pacing, timing, observation and other navigation techniques. Depending on your existing skills this can be tailored for all levels but this is perfect for Summer Mountain Leader, Lowland Leader or Hill & Moorland Leader candidates.
Night Navigation
An ability to navigate confidently in the dark can take away the stress if you find yourself in poor visibility or darkness on complex ground. Our evening courses cover the basics of night navigation as well as more advanced techniques.
Contour only navigation
Being able to navigate by contour features alone will really help to develop your ability to read the landscape around you as you walk, and enhance your map reading skills. We will spend the day on Black Hill looking at lots of fine contour features.
GPS and Online Mapping
Whilst it’s essential to have core skills to be able to read paper maps, there’s no denying that electronic mapping devices exist and can be very useful – especially in emergency situations or to pinpoint your precise location. We will explore different apps, their functionality and discuss the pros and cons of each.
