Beginners Navigation (1 Day)

This is a great place to start if you want to learn how to use a map and compass to navigate safety outdoors.

The introduction course is aimed at those with no navigation experience and will take place on lower-level routes on recognised paths and bridleways.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the basics of maps and scales
  • Understand grid references
  • Understand the symbols on a map
  • How to orientate the map and identify features
  • Measure and estimate distances
  • Plan and follow simple routes using basic navigational strategies
  • Understand the basics of contours on the map
  • Understand the basics of using a compass
  • Understand Rights of Way
  • Understand different mobile apps and how best to use them

The course will be delivered with a mix of exercises to build skills and navigation practice whilst out on a walk.

Course needs a minimum of 3 people to run.

Equipment required:

Participants are asked to come prepared for a day outdoors: 

  • Rucksack
  • Walking boots/outdoor shoes
  • Outdoor clothing (No jeans!) 
  • Waterproof jacket and spare warm layer
  • Food and drink
  • Personal medication (if required)

Duration: 1 day

Distance walking: Maximum of 10km with 300m height gain.
