This is a great place to start if you want to learn how to use a map and compass to navigate safety outdoors.
The introduction course is aimed at those with no navigation experience and will take place on lower-level routes on recognised paths and bridleways.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the basics of maps and scales
- Understand grid references
- Understand the symbols on a map
- How to orientate the map and identify features
- Measure and estimate distances
- Plan and follow simple routes using basic navigational strategies
- Understand the basics of contours on the map
- Understand the basics of using a compass
- Understand Rights of Way
- Understand different mobile apps and how best to use them
The course will be delivered with a mix of exercises to build skills and navigation practice whilst out on a walk.
Course needs a minimum of 3 people to run.
Equipment required:
Participants are asked to come prepared for a day outdoors:
- Rucksack
- Walking boots/outdoor shoes
- Outdoor clothing (No jeans!)
- Waterproof jacket and spare warm layer
- Food and drink
- Personal medication (if required)
