Beginners Navigation (2 Day/ Bronze NNAS)

A weekend course aimed at people with limited or no navigation experience to get to grips map reading.

The 2 day introduction course is aimed at those with no navigation experience and will take place on lower-level routes on recognised paths and bridleways. There is the option when booking to add on the National Navigation Award Scheme assessment to achieve the Bronze Award.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the basics of maps and scales
  • Understand grid references
  • Understand the symbols on a map
  • Understanding different map scales
  • How to orientate the map and identify features
  • Measure and estimate distances
  • Plan and follow simple routes using basic navigational strategies
  • Estimate distances on map and ground
  • How to plan a safe walk
  • Understand the basics of contours on the map
  • Understand the basics of using a compass
  • Understand Rights of Way and access rights and responsibilities
  • Understand different mobile apps and how best to use them

Day 1

  • Course introduction and theory session
  • Practical sessions outdoors (lunch break outdoors)

Day 2

  • Practical Session Outdoors
  • De-brief and questions

Course needs a minimum of 3 people to run.

Equipment required:

Participants are asked to come prepared for a day outdoors: 

  • Rucksack
  • Walking boots/outdoor shoes
  • Outdoor clothing (No jeans!) 
  • Waterproof jacket and spare warm layer
  • Food and drink
  • Personal medication (if required)

A full kit list is given with the joining instructions. If you have any special requests, just let us know what you need on your booking form.

If you booked to do the Bronze NNAS award you will have an assessment and if successful you can order a certificate and badge from NNAS. The award is accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 4, and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion.

If you are just interested in the course and don’t want the qualification, you do not have to be assessed.
