The Glyders and the Devil’s Kitchen

RATIO: 4-16

The Glyders are the range of mountains that flank the southern side of the Ogwen Valley in Snowdonia, North Wales. The range takes its name from the two largest mountains, Glyder Fawr (1001m) and Glyder Fach (994m), but also contain the rocky horn of Tryfan (917m), a training ground of many a mountaineer.

The route crosses these peaks and descends through the ominous Devil’s Kitchen; a place that seems impassable to the untrained eyes. The hike is challenging but rewarding, and passes through some of the most stunning and inspiring mountain landscapes in the UK.

The hike will is led by our expert Mountain Leaders that are qualified, insured and highly experienced. All you need to do is come with sense of adventure; we’ll do the rest.

The trek over the Glyders can be shortened or lengthened depending on the strength of the group and the prevailing conditions. An example itinerary:

  1. Llyn Ogwen/Milestone buttress parking. Safety brief and depart
  2. Ascend Tryfan (917 m). Cross into Bwelch Tryfan.
  3. Ascend Glyder Fach (994 m).
  4. Traverse valley edge onto Glyder Fawr (1001 m).
  5. Descend to Idwal Cottage by Cwm Idwal (past the Devils Kitchen)
  6. Valley walk back to the carpark. Debrief and depart.

Personal Fitness:

Hiking the Glydereau is a 1 day trek of 10 km (6 miles) with a total ascent approximately 1000m. The terrain is mountainous, rough/uneven, sometimes loose and often rocky. Depending on route choice, some technical sections may be encountered that require scrambling at grade 1.

Commitment to the route is moderate-to-high. The hike is therefore moderate in difficulty and is suitable for beginners with good fitness, experience walking off-road, and a strong sense of adventure.
