It’s not often that you find a walking guide book which is both practical, informative but also beautiful and artistic. Ron Scholes book is just that.
The book is actually divided into two with the first third being about Ron’s relationship and correspondence with Alfred Wainwright. Handwritten letters, photos and personal stories.
The remainder of the book is reminiscent of any of the Lakeland guides by Wainwright and detailed like any of the Long Distance Walkers association guides with extraordinary detail about Pennine summits and routes.
If you’ve picked up a copy of this book it’s probably because you’re after the hand drawn maps and details of the Pennine Odyssey walking route, covering the Peak District from Leek to Hadrians wall in remarkable detail and historical information.

There is also a South Pennine Triangle route which circles Leek, Ashbourne and Buxton, not technically in the South Pennines (as that is much further north above the Peak District).
I highly recommend reading this book and immersing yourself in the details of the area and be inspired to walk in this wonderful part of England.
